Mike Brandt’s client was charged in March, 2016 with Felony Theft for inappropriately putting discount price tags on merchandise at a store where he was employed and then buying the merchandise at a discounted value. The value of the misappropriated property was over $1,000 and Mike’s client was charged with Felony Theft in Hennepin County. A Felony Theft conviction would have been a significant blow to Mike’s client as he was a young man who in the future will be looking for work and doing other things that would require a background check. A theft conviction on his record would have prohibited him from having many jobs.
Mike was able to work up the case, explaining many of the circumstances surrounding his client and what happened, and based upon this information the prosecuting attorney agreed to allow Mike’s client to go into a diversion program. This basically took the case out of the criminal system and into a program whereby the charges against Mike’s client will be dismissed as long as he complies with some minimal conditions. Not only will the charges be dismissed, but his client will be able to have the records from this incident expunged, saving his client’s future.
