Mike Brandt represented a client who was charged with gross misdemeanor Domestic Assault from an incident occurring in March of 2018 in the city of Blaine, Anoka County, when neighbors called the police because they heard a loud verbal argument. In preparing the matter for trial, Mike had his investigator take a statement from the alleged victim and also raised a defense of self-defense. Mike’s client was basically assaulted by the alleged victim who had been suffering from flashbacks due to some traumatic incidents in her life. Mike was prepared to take the case to trial, but on the day of trial the prosecutor decided they would not move forward with the charges and dismissed the case.
If Mike’s client had been convicted of this, he could have faced up to a year in jail, six years of probation, and various counseling and other requirements. Because of the manner in which the case was resolved, Mike’s client does not face any of those consequences.
