Minnesota law states that anyone currently serving a felony sentence on election day (Tuesday, Nov. 6) is not eligible to vote. This includes people currently incarcerated, serving on probation, or those who have been granted parole for a felony offense. The right to vote is restored once the felony sentence has been completed. The election judge may require you to swear an oath that your voting rights have been restored. In order to avoid delay you should bring papers with you that prove you have completed the sentence.
If you will have completed a felony sentence before election day but have not registered to vote, you are still eligible to register to vote on election day at your polling place. Bring the proof of the completion of your sentence with you along with:
- A form of identification (a MN driver’s license, MN ID card, U.S. passport, U.S. military ID, tribal ID card, or MN college or tech school ID card); and
- Proof of residence (utility bills and rent statements issued within the last 30 days , or a current student fee statement for those living in a dorm).
