So you’re going to be a cop for Halloween? Just don’t go too far when getting into character! In Minnesota, if you falsely impersonate a cop with the intent to mislead another that you’re actually a cop, you could face a misdemeanor charge. And if you take it a step farther and either gain access to a government facility not open to the public, or without legal authority order someone to do something, or operate a motor vehicle with red, blue, or flashing lights, or operate a motor vehicle with police words or symbols on it, then you could face a gross misdemeanor charge. A second offense within five years is a felony.
In “Wayne’s World 2,” Garth is disguised as a traffic cop to help Wayne surveil Cassandra. If that happened in Minnesota, he probably could have been charged with a misdemeanor. But that would have been a tragedy because it may have prevented the classic YMCA scene.
Be careful out there and have fun!
